Traditionally, Oryx are found in desert, steppe and savanna ecosystems of Africa and the Middle East at elevations between 3,500–4,800 feet. In New Mexico, the Chihuahuan Desert in White Sands Missile Range and the surrounding areas is remarkably similar to the arid, native habitats where oryx subsist with very little water. New Mexico Oryx hunting originated in the late 1940’s when Frank C. Hibben, an avid big-game hunter and then chairman of the New Mexico State Game Commission, remembered hunting the African oryx in arid deserts similar to regions of southern New Mexico. Subsequently, the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish (NMDGF) from 1969–1977 released 93 captivity bred oryx onto White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) in the Tularosa Basin. As a result, Oryx hunting is now available. Similar to Africa, the Tularosa Basin has a large predator, the native mountain lion, that was expected to prey on oryx and help maintain a localized and healthy population— hopefully of about 600 animals. But lack of predation and rapid reproduction by this exotic hunt species quickly established a population that spread into surrounding areas, peaking at 4,000–6,000 animals by 2001. Already by the mid-1990s, the overabundance had prompted NMDGF and WSMR to develop a management plan to address the spreading population. Working with private landowners and public-land managers from the National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife, USDA Forest Service and BLM, Oryx hunting to manage population growth are conducted regularly and licenses issued periodically for oryx hunting move beyond the boundaries of WSMR ( off range ). Oryx primarily live in herds of 10–40 animals, comprised of one dominant male, a harem of females and a few non-dominant males. Many males remain solitary and defend a sole territory by marking it with dung deposits. This hunt package is for a 2:1 fully guided 5 day hunt. Option to upgrade to a 1:1 hunt. This outfitter only offers hunt OFF RANGE hunts on both public and private land.

This outfitter has a few options for their lodging and accommodations for the hunters that want to experience the wall tent atmosphere we have wall tents on elevated platforms with wood stove heat, electric ran to them to charge electrical devices. They are outfitted with 4-full size beds with plenty of room for gear. We also have a cabin that is available that is outfitted with 4-full size beds plenty of room for gear and power ran with several electrical outlets to charge phones cameras etc. Cabins and lodge is also available depending on what unit is drawn.

Note: We do prepare our delicious food a little on the spicy side so if you have a problem with that we ask that you please let us know ahead of time so that we can help you enjoy your meal all the more. With all of the lodging accommodations meals are always the same and sure to give you an amazing taste of what New Mexico food is all about. Based on the kind of hunt booked (wall tent or lodge) depending on the unit drawn, the outfitter will supply a full kitchen or field kitchen for meals.

The outfitter can arrange the hunt for any physical ability. Hunter will need to be prepared to stalk and crawl to get within shot distance of the target animal. Travel will be provided on this hunt with trucks and side x sides. Oryx can be found in steep and rocky terrain so hunter will need to be prepared for some moderate to heavy hiking. Hunter will need to be prepared to hike 1-4 miles a day.

Transportation (To/From Basecamp)

Whether driving or flying, we recommend that you arrive a day or two before your hunt, in order to make sure you are ready for the first day of the hunt. You are responsible for your transportation to and from Albuquerque International Airport, It is a good idea to rent a truck or SUV for the roads you’ll be traveling. Outfitter will meet hunters at their home base bed and breakfast before the hunt starts.

Description

Hunter should be prepared for a variety of weather depending on when the hunt is booked. A good layering system is recommended with long sleeves and a light jacket as weather can be windy and cooler in the mornings and evenings. Good glass (both spotting scope and binoculars) are recommended. Outfitter suggests 10x42 or 15x50 or better. Hunter will need to be prepared to stalk by crawling to get in the best position to make a shot on a good buck. All field transportation will be provided by truck or side x side. Full gear list to be provided if requested when booked.
