Description
This is a great hunt for once in a life tag holder for Bison in the Henry Mountains. Hunter may choose to hire guides only (meals and lodging on their own) or arrange for a fully guided 5 day hunt with 2 guides. With an animal of this caliber it is recommended to have 2 guides. Additional days can be added for a daily rate or 9 day hunts can be arranged. Non-hunters may accompany for a daily rate. Hunter will need to be prepared for a physical hunt. Mountains in the area range from 4,800 to 11,500 feet. The area currently used by bison covers approximately 300,000 acres. Topography includes steep mountain slopes, benches and foothills, flat mesas, and deeply eroded canyons. The major vegetative communities found in the area are salt desert shrub, pinyon-juniper, mountain brush, aspen-conifer, and sub-alpine. Bison use is found throughout the area, in all elevations, topographies, vegetative communities, and seasons. In later season hunts, snow may be possible. This outfitter has all the permits to hunt all around the mountains. Pre-scouting to find big bulls will be conducted to ensure trophy animals are selected. Most of this unit is public land with only 1.5% being private. These are free range bison reintroduced into the area in 1941 from Yellowstone National Park. Only 18 bison were released and now roughly 300 bison occupy the area. The Henry Mountains herd is one of only four free roaming, genetically pure herds remaining on public lands in North America. It is recognized as a key population in maintaining the bison genetics. Licenses are limited as this is a once in a lifetime tag.

Hunters will need to be prepared for some heavy hiking for this hunt. Trucks will be used on accessible roads, but the mountains are tall and hunters will need to be able to reach glassing points. Once a target bull is located then hunter's will need to be able to hike to get into a good position. Tallest peak in the area is 11,500. Later season hunts will require less hiking if snow is present. Better physical ability will provide better shot opportunity.
